Here you will find different ways of getting to Washington DC from Dulles airport. If you travel in a group, it might get a bit complicated. The airport is far from the city, but don’t worry, you will find all possible options down below, for every budget and requirement!
WASHINGTON DC METRO BUS (to and from Dulles)
From the airport to the city
Metrobus offers transportation service to downtown D.C and back (called 5A). It leaves every 30 or 60 minutes (depends on a day). On weekdays the first bus leaves Dulles at 5:50 a.m and the last one at 11:35 p.m. BUT on Saturday and Sunday the first bus leaves at 6:35 a.m and the last one at 11:25
The bus makes Three stops (both way): Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride; Rosslyn Metro Station; L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station, 7th St. and D St, SW – downtown D.C
From Washington D.C to Dulles Airport
The bus departs from L’Enfant Plaza at 4:50 a.m on weekdays, you can catch the last bus at 10:30 p.m. But don’t forget that o weekends the first departure is at 5:30 a.m, the last one (on Saturday) is anyway at 10:30 pm, BUT on Sunday it is 10:15 p.m. You can always check DC MetroBus official schedule on their website.
Cost: $7.50 for SmartTrip card users and visitors who pay in cash. Seniors and people with disabilities pay $3.75
Time: 50 minutes minimum + 20-40 minutes if you travel during rush hour.
Pros: no transfer needed, cheap.
Cons: not the most convenient option from big groups.
SUBWAY (DC metro rail)
If you are an experienced traveler and you orientate very well in metros then this option is for you, but remember to look after the group you travel with, so that no one gets lost! 🙂
You will have to take Silver Metro Line (Wiehle-Reston East station), but unfortunately it is not located at the airport, even though it is only 10 minutes away by the bus. Where do you find the bus? It’s easy, at the arrival level door #4, it leaves every 15-20 minutes.
SmartCard is not accepted for this trip, so you must purchase a ticket (card or cash) from the counter which is located inside Arrival door #4 right at the Baggage Claim level. Once you get to Wiehle-Reston East, you can then go anywhere in the city, however because you will have to make transfers, this may not be the best option if you have luggage.
Cost: the bus from Dulles to metro station is $5/person, free for children under 2 y.o. + an additional $5,90 to get to downtown D.C = $10,90
Time: 60-90 minutes (depends on the time you spend getting to the metro).
Pros: very budget friendly, isn’t affected by the traffic.
Cons: transfer needed, not a great option if you travel in a group and with luggage.
Washington Flyer Taxi is available at Dulles Airport 24/7 all year round, no reservation required. Even though it is not very convenient to take taxis if you travel in big groups, but it is still an option, especially because it can take you anywhere around the DC, door to door.
TIP: their website has a map with estimating fares in the areas you might go. If you worried about not having cash on you - it is not a problem, taxis accept different payment methods: credit cards, cash, airline vouchers.
How to find a TAXI? You should follow signs at the airport towards ground transportation to doors 2 and 6, there you will find taxi representatives.
Cost: $60-80 per taxi (approx. $20 per person)
Time: 40-60 min – free road; 60-80 min during rush hour.
Pros: fast; comfortable; door to door option.
Cons: expensive, not the best choice for big groups.

It is hard to estimate the cost per person, since usually groups like 9+ people use this service, also it all depends on many factors (time, destination, size of a vehicle, etc.)
Cost: $12 per person for a full bus. $650-750 for 55 passenger bus.
Time: 50 min minimum; 60-90 min during rush hour, also depends on the destination.
Pros: the best option for big groups, door to door, good customer service.
Cons: you will need to speak to our friendly staff and order in advance.
Nice to know: If you plane is delayed we will adjust your bus schedule.
Do you want to know more about the services we offer, you can check here.
If you are looking for a very budget friendly trip then you should try the Washington DC Metro Bus, but remember that you anyway will have to make transfers to get to your destination (and it is additional costs for subway, bus, taxi, etc.). It won’t be a problem if you travel in a small group but can get complicated and even more expensive than other options if you travel in a big group.
Subway, on the other hand is not a very good option, because you will have to make transfers, pay twice, carry your luggage around. It will take a lot of time to buy tickets for all members of the group etc.
So, what is the best option? You can choose between an UBER or a COACH BUS (you may choose between a Charter bus, a Mini bus and a School bus; it depends only on the size of the group, your requirements and needs. With a coach you can plan everything up front, have wifi on board, big seats and comfortable ride.
|Time||Total Price $||Price $ per Passanger (50)|
|Metro Bus||90 minutes||$ 375||$ 7.50|
|Subway||90 minutes||$ 545||$ 10.90|
|Taxi||60 minutes||$ 875||$ 17.5|
|Bookbuses||60 minutes||$450-650 (round trip)||$ 10-13|
